Professor Don MacLaren
Cert.Ed., BSc., MSc., PhD., FBASES, FECSS
Don is an emeritus professor of Sports Nutrition at Liverpool John Moores University, which is a testimony to his many publications on the subject; as well as his presentations at numerous scientific and coaching conferences. Research-active since 1980 in the fields of carbohydrate and fat metabolism, nutritional supplements and applied aspects of sports/performance nutrition, Don was also chair of the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences ‘Sports Nutrition Interest Group’ and a member of the working party on sports nutrition accreditation; a joint initiative between BASES, Nutrition Society, the BOA and dietitians. He was secretary of the ‘physiology section’ of BASES and is an accredited physiologist with the British Olympic Association. A consequence of the work undertaken has resulted in two prestigious fellowships being awarded: FBASES and FECSS.
Don has worked as a nutritional consultant to Liverpool FC, Bolton Wanderers FC, Sunderland FC, Everton FC, Derby County FC, Colchester United FC, Hull FC, Wigan Athletic FC and Manchester City FC, as well as Sale Sharks RUFC and Northampton Saints RUFC. Don has undertaken significant contracted research with such companies as Novartis, Mars, GSK and Red Bull, and has been responsible for the development of the Nutrition X range of sports nutrition supplements. His lecturing duties have resulted in many successful PhD, MSc and BSc students ‘passing through his hands’. In addition, he wrote, organised and was programme leader for the BSc Coaching Science degree in the early 1990s – the first coaching science undergraduate programme in the UK. Although retired from full-time duties at LJMU in 2010, Don has kept his links by lecturing to final year students and on the MSc programmes at LJMU and at the University of Chester, as well as helping with research ideas and projects.
Additionally, Don has advised a number of athletes (including Olympians) on aspects of nutrition and supplementation over the years in one-to-one consultations. Likewise, he has advised some key business persons on aspects of ‘healthy’ eating whilst engaged in a busy lifestyle.
