Professor Don MacLaren

Don is an emeritus professor of Sports Nutrition at Liverpool John Moores University, with multiple research papers and published essays on the subject under his belt. Having been active in research since 1980in the fields of carbohydrate and fat metabolism, nutritional ergogenic aids,and applied aspects of sports nutrition, Don’s lecturing duties have resulted in many successful PhD, MSc and BSc students ‘passing through his hands’. Don also regularly leads presentations at scientific and coaching conferences in his specified fields.
In addition, Don wrote, organised and was programme leader for the BSc Coaching Science degree in the early 1990s – the first coaching science undergraduate programme in the UK. He was chair of the BASES ‘Sports Nutrition Interest Group’ and a member of the working party on sports nutrition accreditation; a joint initiative between BASES, Nutrition Society, the BOA,and dietitians. He was secretary of the ‘physiology section’ of BASES and is an accredited physiologist with the BOA. He has been made a Fellow of both BASES and ECSS – a credit to his national and international standing in sports science/nutrition.
Don has been nutritional consultant with Liverpool FC.,Derby County FC., Colchester United FC., Hull F.C., Wigan Athletic FC.,Sunderland FC., Sale Sharks RUFC, and Northampton Saints RUFC. Currently (andover the last 9 seasons) he is nutritional advisor to Everton FC as well as Bolton Wanderers FC. Don has undertaken significant contracted research with such companies as Novartis, Mars, GSK, Red Bull and Penta water. Together with another sport science colleague, Don has been responsible for the development of the Nutrition X range of sports nutrition products.
